Achievements
Congratulations to Yendall Burne and Najeeb Rehman, now Level One qualified umpires handling senior matches. Also to these juniors playing Saturday hockey who have been selected for regional performance centres: Callum Addison, Archie Callaghan, Calum Inchbald, Tom Kraft, and Sam Welsh.
On the pitch
The last month has seen results looking up for most teams, especially the Ladies all of whose teams won on the last weekend before the break. The men’s 1’s are in a very tight league, lying 4th but only one point behind the leaders despite having been without the injured Budgie for several weeks. Competition for the Britnell Trophy could be close this season with Stephen Sloan and Chris Goodchild both leading scorers in their respective divisions with 14 goals apiece.

Here are the reports received from captains and managers. If your team doesn’t feature you know who to nudge.
Ladies 1XI
Sitting 4th after half the season gone. The squad is playing some fantastic passing hockey. With a mix of youth and experience and a welcome return of Edgers to strengthen up the defence the second half of the season is looking very promising. Goals have been shared around the team but a few more needed to push for some convincing wins.
Men’s 1XI
In the first half of the season Wycombe Men’s first XI have shown promise but still have a lot of hard work to do in achieving their goal of promotion this year. Following the Croxson cup victory the Men embarked on a good run of games, leading the table having played 6 games. Tougher times were to follow as the team began to struggle compounded with the loss of captain William Budgell till New Year with injury. However, after a rocky period the team soon regained their confidence with the juniors coming to the fore. A miserly defence with the fewest goals conceded in the league mixed with the top goal scorer in the league Stephen Sloan, Wycombe Men’s first XI will look to push for first place in the New Year. Despite having the youngest average age in the league the juniors have blossomed and begun to show leadership. Special mention must go to Callum Addison who was selected for the England u18’s squad but breakthroughs from Will Butterworth, Archie Callaghan and George Phillips should not be underestimated. I look forward to the New Year and have full faith in my team and I hope that we have the wherewithal to deliver a promotion for Ian Sloan this year.
U18 Girls
England Hockey Cup & Plate Competition
In a repeat of last season Wycombe U18s found ourselves with just about the toughest draw possible against the National League topping side Surbiton. Unfortunately the closely fought match ended with a narrow 2 – 1 defeat. It was definitely a match we could have won but with no substitutes at all we just did not have the legs in the end.
Home Counties U18 Premier League
We have had two strong opening results away to both Trojans and Southgate. As you can see below we currently sit 2nd to Reading on goals scored. Our next fixture on January 8th against Reading at home will be all imporatant.
England Hockey U18 Indoor Championships
The indoor squad have been training on occasional Sunday evenings and playing in a competitive indoor league on Monday nights. In the league the U18s are unbeaten and have enjoyed the highest number of goals scored and least conceded.
Under 14’s
The season so far has been mixed for BU14’s A and Development team with the Development team having more wins that the A team.
A highlight for the BU14 and BU12 was an internal WHC Four Nations 7 a side tournament which we ran on 4th December at RGS. We had a total of 32 who came along to play in a fun tournament and who had all been given a Nation to play as – Holland, Wales, Scotland and Ireland – the pitch was full of colour! The team captains bought along mascots and the atmosphere was great with nearly all of the parents staying to either watch the matches or step up to coach, mentor or umpire. It was brilliant getting so many involved and we plan to run another tournament Quarter 1 2017. A great day!
A few lines for the U14B D team.
It’s been an exciting period with 1 win from the previous 3 games. Where the team lost the results were close (6:5 and 2:1) and despite that the matches have been thrilling, the boys (and parents) have really enjoyed their hockey. Special mention to Aidan Clarke who as keeper has performed admirably.
Boys U16
The Boys U16’s are having an encouraging season having won 3 matches and lost just the one. We have a squad of 18 boys from Years 10 and 11 and they are starting to work well together in matches having practiced in some training sessions by playing against some of the Men!
Our last match against Ashford was particularly exciting with Wycombe winning 4-3. This having gone down by 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. Wycombe re-formed and managed to go 4-3 up by half time. The held on grimly to their lead for the whole of the second half.
Many of our squad are currently involved in trials for JAC County trials. We are also preparing to take part in the first Indoor hockey tournament for this squad in Canterbury on 18th December. Dan Andrews is training the squad for this on Sunday nights.
