WHC Newsletter September 2016

The best places for up to date Club news are Facebook and the website but we will provide this newsletter at intervals during the season.  Ladies leagues have already started and while the men’s leagues have yet to begin victory in the Croxson Trophy was a good way to get off the mark.

Committee news

At the AGM David Paul was confirmed as Club Chairman.  Tanya Fyffe has switched to be head of the Ladies’ section and has persuaded Teresa Young to take over as Club Secretary.  Maeve Aalen has done a huge amount to get the website working as it should for subscriptions and match fees.

Club Fest September 3

This all day event covered the full range of WHC activities from minis in the morning to 1st XI friendlies in the afternoon, including the rare sight of our Olympian coach Ian Sloan in a Wycombe shirt as three of his squad were away at the School Games.

School Games

The School Games is a multisport event held at Loughborough University at the beginning of September.  Hockey involved six U-17 teams, three from England and one each from Scotland, Ulster and Wales.  The England squads, selected through the national talent identification scheme, featured four from the Wycombe juniors programme.  The England Blue team captained by Callum Addison and with Dylan Lim Hon beat Wales and Scotland but lost in the final to the England Red team that included Jagdeep Hanspal.  Cameron Ryall playing for England White scored the first goal of the tournament.  Don’t ask me why England Blue are in red shorts in the picture below.

Umpiring Course, Sunday November 6.

The Club as ever is short of umpires.  Heidi has arranged a course at Cressex on November 6 with a number of free places for anyone who is prepared to make a commitment to do a certain amount of club umpiring.   Many players seem to think that they can do a better job than their current umpires so here’s a chance to give it a try. Team News

Ladies 1st XI – Jane Clarke

The ladies have a strong squad this season with experience and youth bringing a mix of speed and quality which with Nick Richards coaching for his second season assisted by Jeremy Wagge and Captained by Jane Clarke hope for a top 4 finish in south league 3A.

Ladies 3rd XI –  Kat Anley Deane

New season, new coach, new management for the ladies 3rd team as they push for promotion. Having kicked off the preseason training nice and early this year, the ladies 3rd team are looking to utilise the upcoming under 16s and 14s girls to off balance the more experienced and ‘social’ players. Watch this space as the 3s ramp up for this seasons great comeback.

Mens 1st XI – William ‘Budgie’ Budgell

In the 2016/17 season Wycombe Men’s first XI have aspirations to challenge for promotion this year. The first XI lost 4 players who have left to attend university. However, they have welcomed back Will Holderness and Dan Maunder who have returned following university. Following Dom Day’s decision to step down as captain William Budgell has some big shoes to fill in the upcoming season. With the juniors a year older and more experienced, combined with the guidance of Ian Sloan preseason results have been promising, reaffirming the desires of the first XI to gain promotion this year.

Men’s 2nd and 3rd XI’s

These two teams are in the same division and giving nothing away.

Mens 5th XI –Naj Rehman

Wycombe 5s aka the Fab 5s hopes for the season are to improve on our last season finishing position of 4th. Last season we won more games away than we’ve done before and finished runners up as the clubs mens team of the year for the 2nd year running. This was down to a great team spirit, hard work and never say die attitude…..and playing good high octane hockey.

We’ve lost a couple of players who served us well last season but I’m confident new players will step up to the mark.

Future issues

Next time we’ll focus on the Juniors but if you have anything that you want to see included please email to [email protected]
